“Exhilarating” is how Thomas Bremser of the Rheinische Post described the concertante performance of the “Walküre” in Duisburg’s Mercatorhalle in May 2019. As on the previous evening, the “Rheingold”, the performance was recorded live. “Die Walküre”, sung in the leading roles by KS Linda Watson, Sarah Ferede, Katarzyna Kuncio, James Rutherford, Michael Weinius and Lukasz Konieczny, celebrated by the audience with standing ovations, can now be heard on the streaming platforms Apple Music and Spotify.
From the editorial of the GMD Axel Kober:
Richard Wagner’s opera cycle “The Ring of the Nibelung” begins and ends on the Rhine, while on the Rhine the composer dreamed of the premiere of his equally visionary and monumental work as early as 1851. Even if Wagner’s festival plans were to come true in a completely different part of Germany, the performance of a “Ring am Rhein” is and remains something special. And what better place to realize it than at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein?
Two cities, two orchestras, two ensembles of singers – with the fantastic singing ensemble of the Rhine Opera and the two outstanding orchestras of the Duisburg Philharmonic and the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra at their two venues in Duisburg and Düsseldorf, the framework conditions were set. The “Ring am Rhein” in the scenic interpretation by Dietrich W. Hilsdorf gradually took shape under my musical direction from June 2017.
The successful conclusion of the almost two-year musical and scenic collaboration was to be a performance of the complete “Ring” cycle at both venues at the end of the 2018 / 19 season. However, a few weeks before the premiere of “Götterdämmerung”, a defective sprinkler system flooded the Theater Duisburg. Water damage initially destroyed the scenic completion of the Duisburg “Ring” .
